Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. As an only girl Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. While working two jobs part-time, she was also a teacher in Temple University. She hoped she would become a English high school teacher. However, her dream was cut short when after three years of studying and working as a teachers aide she dropped out of university. Her career began as a spoken-word artist and performing in live poetry readings. She then teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. The two ended up working together and co-writing You Got Me. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Additionally, she was able to learn about performing arts through the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was signed by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
